Born June 20, 1920 in Beaumont, Texas. He attended Duke University for two years then worked at various jobs until enlisting in the U.S. Marines in World War II. He won the Navy Cross and after the war worked for the Chicago Herald-American as a sportswriter. He came to Detroit and after working for Wolverine Raceway and Hazel Park Raceway he was hired by the Detroit News as a sportswriter. In 1957 he began his own column called Press Box.
